District Governor Sherry Lee and her husband, David, were in Sidney, Australia for the 93rd Annual International Convention in early July.

Gd’ Day, as they say down under. We found Australia was a great place to visit, but there really is “no place like home.”

We all know membership is our key to success. Loving Indivi-duals Offering Needed Services, what better way can we show who we are than through service? The focal point of International President Sid Scruggs year is service, his theme is “A Beacon of Hope.” To show the strength of our worldwide network and shine our light even brighter, change the world and bring a spark to your own lion Heart by participating in Lions Club International’s themed service campaigns.

As you read the Lions Magazine you’ll be getting regular infor-mation on the Global Service Action Campaigns. To quote Melvin Jones, our founder, “You can’t get anywhere in life until you start serving other people.” President Scruggs has asked district Governors to bring this commitment back to our districts. He asks that we engage our youth, especially LEOS, in service projects.

Projects should have visible youth involvement. An idea to really get youth involved in serving our vulnerable youth populations. Perhaps organize a youth forum, or town hall meeting, to understand the views our youth and their needs that are critical to the community. Perhaps assist at camps that serve our children with special needs, there are several camps in Vermont that have great needs for assistance. Organizing a highway or park  cleanup, or perhaps a book drive for a community center, library, Senior Center or other community center would show the community that we care.

Success through service is the central theme for 2010-11. Hands on service and direct contact with the people we serve, is more important than ever. During the month of October Lions around the world will be asked to focus on recommitting to the central idea of Lions Club International as express-ed in our motto: We Serve.
